Ms. Lin from Guangxi Province with Pancreatic Cancer

On August 31, 2016, the last day of summer holiday, middle school teacher Ms. Lin was so happy. She took off hospital gown and put on white shirt and red pants with bright smile. She was cheerful for her recovery, and she believed she could go back school soon. Before discharge, she was willing to take photo with chief surgery president Niu Lizhi and doctor in charge Long Xinan for saving her life.

It’s no exaggeration to describe Mr. Lin’s different conditions from admission to discharge using words “quite a different person”.
At the noon of August 11, busy nurse station became quiet at Fuda Cancer Hospital. Nurses were just like spinning tops starting to stop, the sound of footsteps broke the peace. Helped by two men, a lady was coming in with painful expression. She pressed upper abdomen and hunched over while dragging slowly… The nurse rushed up to meet her.
Middle-aged man said urgently: “Nurse, my wife has pancreatic cancer. These are CT scans and medical reports. Please help us complete admitting procedure and arrange a ward bed.”
“Ok, we will arrange for you immediately…” Nurse said and helped to hold the lady to the ward.
The lady was Ms. Lin, a middle school teacher from Guangxi. The two men were her husband and son.
Soon, ward director Qian Wei, attending doctors Shi Juanjuan and Long Xinan etc. carried out regular examination and inquired history.

Ms. Lin lying on the bed, said painfully, “On April this year, paroxysmal pain occurred in my left upper abdomen, then in left back. Once I stretch the spine or walk, the pain became worse. Squatting or hunching over will relieve it. The pain makes me eat and sleep barely. ”
Ms. Lin went to a doctor soon. She made gastroscope at local hospital and found her with chronic non-atrophic gastritis. The doctor prescribed some gastric drugs for her.
“After taking medicine for some time, the pain didn’t reduce, even became more serious. I went to large hospital in local for physical examination. When I saw the words “terminal pancreatic cancer” on the sheet of enhanced CT report, my mind was blank. That’s terrible!” Ms. Lin recalled.
In the past decade, two teachers and a family member of her school were died from pancreatic cancer. She remembered exactly that their survival time were from three months to half year.
“This devastating diagnose was a hard hit that we didn’t prepare. At that time, she was so sad. And the pain was so bad that she could hardly eat food, which made her losing a lot of weight. I was very anxious. Since that we couldn’t escape, just treat it actively.” Ms. Lin’s husband said and had a deep breath.
In mid-June, accompanied with husband, Ms. Lin admitted to local cancer hospital. They decided to give up surgery and tried to take Traditional Chinese Medicine, because surgery was hard to perform and the surgery plan was not ideal. However, Ms. Lin’s condition didn’t improve after a month. “Though I took painkillers and sleeping pills every night, the pain still tortured me and made me couldn’t sleep, which made me restless…” Seeing Ms. Lin’s signs of distress, husband was very worried.
On July, Ms. Lin learned about a new technique named “Nanoknife” in Internet by her classmate. It could treat pancreatic cancer that wrapped about vascular and nerves. And she asked several doctor friends, they all said that Nanoknife therapy for pancreatic cancer was a good choice. Therefore, they went to Guangzhou immediately and hope to have treatment at larger cancer hospital.
However, ward beds of large hospital were not enough. After waiting many days, Ms. Lin admitted to hospital finally, but doctor told her that they couldn’t arrange surgery right away and advised to have chemotherapy. For chemo was more harmful to body, Ms. Lin didn’t accept the treatment plan. Hearing that Fuda Cancer Hospital has abundant experience on Nanoknife therapy for cancer, they transferred to FUDA at once.

Through series of physical examination, Ms. Lin’s head of pancreas was occupied cyst-solid tumor. Pancreatic cancer should be considered. There were peripancreatic and retroperitoneal multiple large lymph nodes. Part of lesion adhered to the pancreatic tumor. Lower back occurred pain, which meant that celiac plexus was compressed and invaded by the tumor…
President Niu Lizhi and medical team had a discussion on Ms. Lin’s condition and decided to conduct pancreas tumor needle biopsy, irreversible electroporation (Nanoknife therapy) and retroperitoneal block.
The operation was scheduled in the morning of August 17. Ms. Lin went to operation room with her husband and son. Her husband patted her hands, said: “Don’t worry. Have a sleep and you will be fine.”
On that morning, President Niu Lizhi and medical team’s Nanoknife ablation surgery for Ms. Lin was successful. Several days later, she had puncture and drainage by Doctor Zhang Yishi.
After having two operations, Ms. Lin didn’t have pain in abdomen and back. She finally could have a good sleep. Her appetite recovered and condition was improved. During hospitalization, Ms. Lin’s husband accompanied her all the time. After Ms. Lin’s appetite becoming better, he often cooked soups and rice paste for her. “She is malnourished. I can only cook soups and rice paste for her. I cook in different ways every day. Today is adding red dates, and tomorrow will add vegetable, shredded meat and black fungus. Once people say it’s good for health, I will cook. Just like her sentence, I am born to serve her…” Hearing husband’s word, Ms. Lin was so happy.
Abdomen and back were not painful. Ms. Lin often asked husband and son to take her out. Going out made her joyful. She straightened her back and couldn’t help slapping thighs while singing a song lightly.
Ms. Lin was no longer gaunt. She was energetic with bright eyes and smile on her face. She could chat with people who visited her happily and easily.
In the morning of August 31, Ms. Lin expressed her great gratitude to medical staff that helped her before discharging from hospital and said excitedly: “I thought my life was going to the end and I couldn’t survive for a long time. Fortunately, I met you who bring me to life! ”

A center for treating tumors & prolonging lives

Cancer is probably the most dreaded disease anyone can have. When I received my invitation to the blessing of the new wing of The Fuda Cancer Hospital in Guangzhou, China, I didn’t think twice about going and seeing for myself what the hospital has to offer particularly for cancer patients. Together with media friends, I boarded a direct flight from Manila to Guangzhou which took two hours and 25 minutes. We arrived in Guangzhou, China late in the evening. The following day, we were welcomed by Manila-based Fuda volunteer Edward Puno and his gracious wife Cindy who took us for a tour around the new wing of the Fuda Cancer Hospital. Upon entering the hospital premises, we were all so impressed with the hospital facilities. We were informed that the Fuda Cancer Hospital had dedicated a whole floor to their Filipino patients. Each room is complete with all the amenities, including a flat screen TV which has an ABS-CBN channel. “This it to make every Filipino patient at Fuda Hospital and their respective families feel at home,” explains Puno.

I was expecting a gloomy hospital atmosphere but was pleasantly surprised to be greeted by a cheerful ambiance which was provided mainly by the elegant interiors and the ever-smiling staff, which is a big plus especially for patients who have nothing to smile about. There was no language barrier problem since the hospital made sure there were coordinators from different countries to specifically attend to the needs of their foreign patients and their families.

Because of the hospital’s high standards, we immediately inquired about the costs of treatments and hospital stay. We were told that regardless of what room patients and their families choose (there are VIP rooms which have a living room, kitchen, and extra bedroom; suite rooms; standard rooms; and rooms for four patients), the total hospital cost remains the same. Once the patient arrives, a proposed treatment plan is given to the patient or a family member. Expect no surprise or additional charges as Fuda doctors do not charge professional fees, which makes the treatment very reasonable and worth every cent.

A money changer, restaurant and coffee shop are conveniently located inside the hospital premises.

At the helm of this state-of-the-art hospital is chief executive/president Dr. Kecheng Xu, a world-renowned specialist in oncology, gastroenterology, and hepatology. After graduation from Nanton Medical College in 1963, he had his post graduate studies at Fudan University. He was a visiting professor on hepatology and oncology at Chiba University, Japan and took further studies at the Reiter State University, Tulane University, and Johns Hopkins University in the United States. He is the incoming vice president of the International Society of Cryosurgery.

Boasting a very competent team of doctors, Fuda Cancer Hospital has for the last 10 years successfully treated thousands of domestic and international patients. It is the first hospital in China to successfully perform cryosurgery with over 8,000 cases, more than what any other hospital in the world has done.

Dr. Franco Lugnani, president of the International Society of Cryosurgery based in Italy, has singled out Fuda Cancer Hospital to be the cryotherapy center in the Asia Pacific region for the hospital’s excellent work.

“Cryosurgery can be done for any part of the body, from head to toe,” says Dr. Lizhi Niu, deputy chief executive of Fuda Cancer Hospital.

Performed mostly under local anesthesia, cryosurgery can be used to treat tumors that could not be removed for early or end-stage cancer. A cryosurgical (CSA) probe is inserted into the tumor and a refrigerant is passed through the probe; the temperature is raised to thaw the frozen tumor. This process is repeated two or three times to complete ablation and thawing of the whole tumor. CSA can be carried out with the help of surgery, endoscope, ultrasound or CT- guided. Percutaneous cryosurgical ablation is a minimally invasive technique with little side effects. It will not cause pain, instead it can stop pain rapidly. CSA is suitable for cancer patients with unresectable tumors or patients that cannot tolerate surgery.

“For those who are beyond surgery or other treatments, cryosurgery aims to extend survival,” he adds.

Dr. Xu explains, “After they have been treated in our hospital, more than 70 percent of these patients experience significant improvement and their survival time has been prolonged, not by months but rather by years. Many patients, including those with liver cancer and lung cancer, have lived for more than five years, with the longest survival time of nine years. Some pancreatic cancer (the “king of cancer”) patients even lived for an additional 55 months.”

Once a cancer patient comes in, an honest assessment is given as to whether or not the patient can be treated and what he/she can expect. Dr. Mu Feng, president of North District Fuda Hospital, also adds that a routine checkup, particularly a PET CT scan, by a skilled and competent doctor is important.

As there are various approaches to treating cancer, there are also various hospitals in China doing cryosurgery. Thus, one must do an extensive research on which treatment and which hospital can best cater to our sick loved one’s needs. In this age of modern technology, cancer patients, through early detection, do have the chance to survive or, at the very least, extend their lives. The decision is theirs to make.

Nanoknife Therapy Helped Indian Pancreatic Cancer Professor Survive.

--Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital Succeed again in Treating Pancreatic Cancer with NanoKnife Therapy

Recently, Prof. Pratibha, a pancreatic cancer patient from India, told the reporter with great excitement, “NanoKnife therapy made me able to walk normally again” after she underwent NanoKnife therapy on pancreatic cancer at Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital.

Several months ago, Prof. Pratibha was undergoing a life or death test. Back then, she looked totally different from the way she is now as she looks like a noble woman who is dignified, talkative, beautiful and smart now.

A photo of Prof. Pratibha Rajgopal (R 3), her family member and medical workers

Prof. Pratibha was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two months ago at local hospital due to discomfort in abdomen. Doctor told her family member that the chance of treatment was very low. The best chance would be about 10%. Prof. Pratibha was desperate to hear the news. She underwent one cycle of chemotherapy in local hospital, the side effects of which made her suffer a lot.

Her son, who is working in America, searched for the most renowned cancer hospital in the world online, hoping that his mother could be treated. After searching on the internet for a while, he located Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital in China. Compared with other international cancer hospitals, he believed that the argon-helium cryosurgery, iodine seeds implantation therapy and NanoKnife therapy that FUDA has can deliver good curative effects for pancreatic cancer patients. Among all the therapies, the latest treatment NanoKnife therapy that FUDA has introduced delivers remarkable curative effects for pancreatic cancer, which has become widely recognized in the world. Moreover, the concept of coexisting with cancer proposed by Professor Xu Kecheng coincides with his view of cancer.

Prof. Pratibha was admitted into Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital in the company of her sister and the other son on August 26, 2015. The medial team led by President NIu Lizhi arranged a series examinations for her on August 27. Diagnosis upon admission was Stage III T4N0M0 pancreatic cancer, II type diabetes and hypertension.

The patient together with her family members unanimously requested to receive NanoKnife therapy. In order to choose the best treatment for her, President Niu Lizhi and other experts, after discussion, decided to give her NanoKnife therapy combined with “3C+P” treatment mode. On August 28, she was given combined immunotherapy for cancer (CIC)--one therapy in the “3C+P” treatment mode--in order to improve her immunity.

After her condition became stable, Chief President Xu Kecheng, President Niu Lizhi and other experts had a penal discussion about her further treatment, after which they decided to give her NanoKnife therapy. On August 31, the medical team led by Niu Lizhi performed NanoKnife therapy on pancreatic cancer for her. The procedure went smoothly and the patient’s postoperative recovery was great. On September 12, Prof. Pratibha was discharged and went back to India.

Prof. Pratibha said, “coming to Fuda Cancer Hospital for treatment is the best decision that i have ever made in my life and has also given me the opportunity to better know about Chinese doctors, especially such excellent medical experts as Chief President Xu Kecheng and President Niu Lizhi. Under their leadership, medical workers at Fuda have developed a harmonious relationship with patients. During my hospitalization, i am deeply touched by the comprehensive treatment i have received and also the careful nursing delivered by nurses. Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital has proven itself to be an international specialized cancer hospital.”

Three months ago, Fuda Cancer Hospital became the first to have introduced NanoKnife therapy (Irreversible Electroporation) in Mainland of China. Medical workers at Fuda have successfully performed NanoKnife therapy for over 40 pancreatic cancer and liver cancer patients, after which the curative effect was remarkable.

A retired doctor from Macau developed a liking for FUDA via NanoKnife

At 9:00 a.m., April 29, 2016, President Niu Lizhi, Director Xu Jiongyuan, Dr. Shi Hongxia, and other medical workers were making their routine rounds. Right after they walked into room 512, Mrs. Huang from Macau eagerly reported her husband’s condition to the doctors. “Today is the best day for my husband over the past half a year. In the morning, he told me unexpectedly that he wanted to have something to eat and he ate a half bowel of porridge delivered by the caregiver. It’s a great thing for him to be able to eat.”

How come Mr. Huang is contented with having just a half bowel of porridge? His story should be traced back to half a year ago.

“Stomachache” covered up the fact that he was having pancreatic cancer

Mr. Huang, 73 years old, told us that his family has been in the business of textile for many years but he did not carry on his family’s business. Instead, he chose to pursue an utterly different occupation-being a doctor. After graduated from Guangzhou Medical School (currently Guangzhou Medical University), he has been engaged in medicine for about half a century. Once served as a radiologist Kiang Wu Hospital in Macau, he opened up his own examination center later. At present, he has retired from his work for a couple of years.

Last May, Mr. Huang started to have upper abdominal pain. In the beginning, He did not pay any attention to it and had it treated as gastritis for a period of time but the treatment showed futile. As the disease progressed, he had aggravated abdominal pain, which had radiated to the back. He couldn’t eat and sleep due to the severe pain. Last August, he received abdomen CT scan, which showed a mass sizing 4.3cmx3.5cm. He was confirmed to have pancreatic cancer.

Decisively rejected chemotherapy

When asked about Mr. Huang’s condition, Mrs. Huang had tears welled up in her eyes. “As he had abdominal pain very often, we had thought that he was just having stomachache but stomach medicine produced no effect. Then I went with him to the hospital for examination. The blood tests showed high bilirubin and high white blood cell. Further examination evidenced that he should have been suffering from pancreatic cancer. I was reduced into despair as I know pancreatic cancer is really hard to treat.”

As a doctor, Mr. Huang knew very well the malignancy of pancreatic cancer. Being called the King of Cancer, pancreatic cancer is primarily treated with operation. However, he has missed the prime time for operation as the mass in pancreas had grown to over 4cm. Doctors in Macau suggested him to do chemotherapy but he refused. He said, “The major treatment goals for cancer are to remove the tumor, alleviate the pain and prolong patient’s lifespan. Though chemotherapy is an option, it is not producing any actual benefits to pancreatic cancer patients; instead, it is only causing such side effects as nausea and vomiting, which will inflict greater pain to patients.” Hence, Mr. Huang has been adopting TCM treatment, at the same time, hoping he could find more appropriate and effective treatments.

Unfortunately, TCM was not able to control the tumor progression. He was not able to sleep and eat and had his weight reduced from 83kg to 46kg. In the middle of March, he found that he was having clay colored stool and dark brown urine as well as the symptom of jaundice. The relevant examinations showed that he was having pancreatic cancer with lymph nodes metastases, which was accompanied by obstructive jaundice. He received common bile duct stenting at Kiang Wu Hospital. During his hospitalization, he went through infection and fever.

Getting to know Fuda Cancer Hospital via NanoKnife

Prof. Zhu at Kiang Wu Hospital recommended NanoKnife that is available at Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital. As the President of the Macau Society of Surgery, he is well connected with the medical community in mainland China. In October 2015, He invited Niu Lizhi, President of Fuda Cancer Hospital to deliver a speech on NanoKnife at an academic conference held in Macau. He also made a special trip to Fuda Cancer Hospital to investigate the therapeutic effect of NanoKnife for pancreatic cancer.

Having accepted Prof. Zhu’s suggestion, Mr. Zhu came to Fuda Cancer Hospital for treatment on April 18 with the company of Prof. Zhu and Prof. Luo. Thus, he became the first pancreatic cancer to be treated with NanoKnife in Macau.

Upon admission, Mr. Huang completed relevant checkups, which found that the pancreatic tumor had grown to the size of 6.3cmx3.7cmx5cm. He had intense pain, high tumor marker and high white blood cell. Considering the rapid tumor progression, the medical team at Fuda Cancer Hospital had had several rounds of discussion on his treatment plan and finally decided to perform PTCD and Irreversible Electroporation for him on April 20. Prof. Zhu and Prof. Luo also participated in the procedure.

According to Prof. Niu Lizhi, due to the special location of pancreas (surrounded by intestinal canal, bile duct, nerves, blood vessels, etc.), conventional operation or thermal ablation would easily injure these organs and tissues. NanoKnife, after being approved for clinical application, has become a safer and more effective treatment for pancreatic cancer as the important tissues and organs such as bile duct, blood vessels, nerves, intestinal canals can be kept intact during the procedure.

As the mass in pancreas was quite big, the ablation was done in four times. The CT scan one week after NanoKnife showed that the mass shrank from 6.3cm to 5.5cm. Tumor marker decreased from over 600 to 500. The postoperative recovery is good.

The couple spoke highly of the medical staffs at FUDA

As his condition is improving day by day, Mr. Huang curled up a long-lost smile

What the couple said most frequently to the medical workers at FUDA are “thank you” and “I appreciate it”. During his hospitalization, the couple has been confronted with things quite unexpected. They never thought that doctors at FUDA are having such great technologies. After received NanoKnife, Mr. Huang has had his pain greatly relieved and he is able to sleep and eat. They never thought that medical workers at FUDA are so considerate. Prof. Niu is always making rounds two times a day and asked about his condition even when he was on business trip. They never thought that medical workers are so patient-oriented. Medical workers, including president, doctors, nurses and cleaners, are so refined and courteous to patients.

On April 30, Mr. Huang was discharged from Fuda Cancer Hospital. He will continue to receive some consolidation therapy in Macau. We believe he will make a good recovery.

Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital helped me realize my three wishes

In the afternoon of April 19, 2016, room 516, Fuda Cancer Hospital Tianhe Branch was very lively with birthday song and laughter coming out. April 19 marks Mr. Zhong’s 62th birthday and also Mrs. Zhong’s lunar birthday. The birthday is particularly meaningful as this is the first time for them to celebrate an overlapped birthday over the past 40 years and more. Nurses of the 5th ward prepared a cake for the couple, planning to give them a special surprise. When the cake was served in front of them, the couple’s faces were full of surprise, touch and appreciation. They have never thought they would celebrate such a warm and unforgettable birthday in the hospital.

After receiving comprehensive treatments at FUDA, Mr. Zhong has had improved condition. The birthday also marks a new beginning for him. Director Xu Jiongyuan, attending physician Shi Hongxia, resident doctor Zhan Si, head nurse Zhan Xiao all presented to wish him a very happy birthday. With a happy smile, Mr. Zhong put his palms together devoutly and made his birthday wish. He said, “I would like to thank you for your comprehensive treatment and thoughtful care, without which I wouldn’t be able to recover so well. I also have had my three wishes come true at FUDA as I am able to drink, eat and have a shower. ”

Mr. Zhong celebrated his birthday in the ward

Mrs. Zhong told us that she and her husband are both retirees from a large-scale tramway company in Guangzhou. They have supported each other for 40 years since their marriage. In 2014, Mr. Zhong retired from the company that he had served for several decades. He had planned to enjoy his retirement and travel around with his wife and daughter. Unfortunately, Mr. Zhong started to have frequent abdominal pain in September last year. As he has had a medical history of gallstone for more than 20 years, he had thought it was the gallstone that had caused abdominal pain. He took anti-inflammatory drug for gallstone but the pain showed no remission. In the end, his abdomen was so painful that he couldn’t take it anymore. He went for physical examination at a local hospital with his wife. The physical examination came out. The doctor told his wife that Mr. Zhong was suspected to be suffering from pancreatic cancer and he was advised to do further examination at a major hospital. “The diagnosis was like a thunderbolt out of a clear sky. The world seemed to have collapsed around me. But I have to hold in and hide the diagnosis from him. I’m afraid the diagnosis may knock him down.”Mrs. Zhong noted. After learning the diagnosis, Mr. Zhong’s son-in-law contacted a major hospital at once.

In late November, 2015, Mr. Zhong was admitted into the major hospital. After he completed relevant examinations, doctors told his family that conventional operation was not an option and NanoKnife was the only way out. Soon, Mr. Zhong underwent NanoKnife in the hospital. Postoperative pathological result showed B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the pancreas. He also underwent percutaneous transhepatic cholangial drainage after NanoKnife.

However, the procedure was not successful. Mr. Zhong couldn’t eat or sleep due to abdominal pain and abdominal distension half a month after the procedure. “I was in so much pain and disappointed. All I want was to be able to have a sip of water, eat a bowel of porridge, have a shower and have a good sleep. These have been my best wishes since my operation three months ago. ”.

Mrs. Zhong recalled tearfully, “He couldn’t eat or sleep and could only cuddle up for one or two hours. Many of his wardmates asked in curiosity, “Why he cannot sleep on his back?”Mrs. Zhong wiped off her tears and continued, “Since his illness, he has lost his weight from 60 kg to 44.5 kg. Seeing him in so much pain, we began looking for other hospitals to see if there is any treatment available that could alleviate his symptoms. I’m ready to spend all our savings as long as he could get healed.”

“It is my elder sister who recommended us to have a try at Fuda Cancer Hospital. She lives nearby and was told that FUDA has been very good in treating cancer.”Mrs. Zhong saw a glimmer of hope.

The morning of February 20, 2016 was the set time for Xu Kecheng, President of Fuda Cancer Hospital, to hold free consultation for cancer patients. Mrs. Zhong came to FUDA very early that day and she was really anxious while waiting to see President Xu. She made an uttermost effort to calm herself down. “I had a mixed feeling that day, wondering how President Xu would comment on my husband’s condition.”After studied Mr. Zhong’s medical report, President Xu said, “We are relieved to see that the tumor is localized at the head of pancreas. We will try our best to treat your husband.”

After consulting President Xu, Mrs. Zhong felt much relieved. In the evening of February 20, Mr. Zhong went through admission procedure at FUDA. What President Xu said aroused his will to fight against cancer. Mr. Zhong said, “I have long been tortured by the disease. It is with President Xu’s encouragement that I have the confidence to fight against cancer. I will hold what President Xu said close to my heart. I would like to express my appreciation to doctors and nurses at FUDA for their patience and care shown to me. ”

After receiving treatment at FUDA, Mr. Zhong’s symptoms have been greatly alleviated. The attending doctor Shi Hongxia performed peritoneal drainage and pleuracentesis for him. Moreover, Mr. Zhong underwent DC-CIK immunotherapy, interventional chemotherapy and molecular targeted therapy. After the current phase of treatment, Mr. Zhong felt “my intestines are working and I can eat porridge now.”

“Chief President Xu Kecheng and President Niu Lizhi come to visit me not long after my admission. They encouraged me to be confident in the face of cancer. My attending physician Shi Hongxia has always been patient and careful in explaining to me the upcoming procedure.” Mr. Zhong said with a smile. He said with a relived smile that he couldn’t able to have such a good recovery without the treatment at Fuda Cancer Hospital.

Zhan Xiao, head nurse of 5th ward, said, “It pains us to see that Mr. Zhong had three drainage tubes on his body upon admission. Seeing him in such pain, our nurses spent over half an hour cleaning tubes for him and helped Mrs. Zhong wash Mr. Zhong. We felt really relieved to see that Mr. Zhong is improving day by day.”

Mr. Zhong signed, “I underwent untold suffering from the disease before I came to Fuda Cancer Hospital. I haven’t had a shower for three months. I really wanted to have a shower to make myself feel better. It was even a luxury for me to have a shower before my admission. However, medical staffs at FUDA has not only realized my wish of having a shower but also made me able to eat and walk. For me, that can be said to be the biggest happiness.”

Mrs. Zhong further added, “The generous help and care from doctors, nurses and caregivers have made me feel warmly welcome. We are very satisfied with their elaborate service.”

In the afternoon of April 13, when Prof. Xu Kecheng, Dr. Niu Lizhi and other doctors were making routine rounds, Prof. Xu said to Mr. Zhong, “Congratulations! You have had a very good recovery. You can be discharged soon.”Mr. Zhong expressed his joy effusively while shaking hands with the two presidents.

The Rank Prize Winner Lu Mingying’s Story of Seeking Treatment at Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital

On March 16, a special patient attended at Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital Press Conference. It’s Chinese British Scientist Dr. Lu Mingying, the Rank Prize winner.

Last month, she accepted nanoknife therapy at Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital, and she was able to walk in the next day.

Dr. Niu Lizhi and Ms. Lu

In the end of 1980s, digital camera was very expensive, which cost several thousand dollars on the international market. Because the imaging sensor used in digital camera was costly at that time. In 1987 and 1989, Wang Guoyu and his wife Lu Mingying joined in experimental group of Edinburgh University in UK. With two professors of Edinburgh University tried to find a new imaging senor. After research, they succeeded in applying common CMOS in imaging sensor. It’s obvious that the innovation brought out so much benefit. The cost of imaging sensor fell by a third, which could put into mass production. Therefore, taking photo with mobile phone also turned to be easy. The cost of camera chip in mobile phone reduced to four dollars dramatically. Phone equipped with camera was not longer luxury but ordinary consumer item. Therefore, they were awarded top prize in the field of science—the Rank Prize. The technique was firstly applied in Nokia mobile phone. “It produces four million camera chips of mobile phones everyday in the world, which is connected with our technique.” Lu Mingying said.

The Rank Prize is one of the top awards in the field of British science, which is regarded as the Nobel Prize in the field of photoelectron and nutrition. The award goes to those who make innovation and contribution to human society in photoelectron and nutrition in the world. Just a few Chinese won this prize, like the Father of Hybrid Rice Yuan Longping and the Father of Optical Fibre Gao Kun.

Lu Mingying felt uncomfortable when she gave lecture at Kunming not long ago, and she was diagnosed as cholangiocarcinoma in local hospital. Her life encountered disaster.

At first, she chose to back Britain for treatment. She once asked help form Prof. Leen of Imperial College Medical School, a world-renowned oncologist specialized at nanoknife ablation therapy.

She could enjoy free treatment in Britain, but she had to wait. And there was no comprehensive therapy at local hospital. Her condition turned worse quickly, so she decided to go to China for treatment.

After transferring to several hospitals, she went to a cancer hospital which just offered chemotherapy and radiation. She didn’t accept chemotherapy. And she went to hospital at Beijing for consultation. They suggested to have chemotherapy firstly, then to have nanoknife therapy. She still didn’t want to have chemotherapy.

She decided to have the new technique -- nanoknife therapy. “I followed the word ‘nanoknife’ and searched in the internet. Finally, I found Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital. I learnt that FUDA have done more than 70 case of nanoknife surgery by several phone consultations. I thought their technique was mature and determined to Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital to have nanoknife ablation therapy.”

President Dr. Niu Lizhi said, “She suffered from abdominal pain and couldn’t walk when she first came to FUDA.”

She first had photodynamic therapy. On February 2, Lu Mingying had nanoknife therapy at Fuda Cancer Hospital. After four day, on February 6, she became better obviously. She could walk and get up to have a photo with President Niu Lizhi in the ward.

Then, she had comprehensive intervention therapy.

A few days ago, in the ward, Lu Mingying’s husband Wang Guoyu told the author that what they appreciated was the advanced technique for cancer treatment around the world, so they chose FUDA. And he disclosed that they were developing more advanced technique of multi-media digital broadcast which would be used in Beijing Road Walking Street.

Photodynamic Therapy Shows Magic in Treating Esophageal Cancer Patient

In February 23, 2016, Mr. Wu who is from Inner Mongolia came to Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital for re-examination in company of his son. Learning that the result of re-examination was normal, he hold the hands of his attending doctor Xing Yanli with eyes filling with tears and said, “Doctor Xing, thank you very much. And I also want to thank Doctor Li Hongmei. Thank Fuda Cancer Hospital. There are not only excellent medical skills but also satisfactory service. ”

Mr.Wu(Right)and Doctor Xing’s photo

Mr.Wu is 64 years old, who had been manager of a factory for more than 20 years. He wanted to enjoy the pleasures after retirement. Unexpectedly, he was diagnosed as esophageal cancer with lymph metastasis last year. Mr. Wu’s son was eager to save him and hoped him recover soon. They took Mr. Wu to Beijing for seeking treatment, but the answers all were “surgical removal”. Mr. Wu was afraid of the risk of surgery and hoped to find a mini-invasive treatment plan. His two sons were searching around effective treatments. And they learned that Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital had special cancer treatment mode which met the aspiration of Mr. Wu. Therefore, they decided to have a try at Guangzhou.

On August 21, 2015, Mr. Wu came to Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital in company of his son. Chief president Xu Kecheng visited him, which made him surprised. Mr. Wu said, “President Xu was so approachable. He joked with me that he was 75 years old which was 11 years older than me, and he also was a cancer patient. I should be confident because they can help. After hearing these words, I felt a load off my mind.”

Learning that Mr.Wu hoped to be treated with mini-invasive treatment, President Xu held a consultation with experts right away. And they decided to adopt photodynamic therapy in treating Mr. Wu.

In fact, there are not a few patients like Mr. Wu who afraid of surgery in clinic. Besides traditional surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital has “3C+P” personalized therapy which including photodynamic therapy. Cancer photodynamic therapy kills cancer cells efficiently by photosensitizer and laser. And it’s mini-invasive treatment.

At the end of August and October, 2015, Mr. Wu accepted esophageal cancer photodynamic therapy twice. On 7 September, he accepted iodine 125 implantation in cardiac lymph nodes. And the surgery was successful. After surgery, Mr. Wu recovered well. Attending Doctor Xing Yanli said, “After having treatments several times, Mr. Wu was better and he just needed to do regular visits.”

On February 23 of this year, Mr. Wu came back FUDA for re-examination. And all condition was normal. His son said sincerely, “Thank Fuda Cancer Hospital. And I hope Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital can set a branch at Inner Mangolia for the benefit of local patients.” On February 25, Mr. Wu and his son set foot on the way home.
