Pancreatic cancer patient recovered well at FUDA

NanoKnife Therapy Gave Me the Hope of Life--True Testimony from a Pancreatic Cancer Patient at Fuda Cancer Hospital

Her doubts were removed right after she was admitted into Fuda Cancer Hospital

In the morning of July 27, 2015, Ms. Wang went from Shenzhen to Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital for treatment in the company of her daughter. The receptionists from the service department of Fuda Cancer Hospital have been expecting them at the railway station before they came. They helped with the patient with the luggage and answered all questions the patient put forward. After they get their answers, Ms. Wang and her daughter were relieved and turned on a bright smile as all  doubts were cleared.

Ms. Wang’s condition worsened. She and her family get to know FUDA from TV

Ms. Wang, 75-year-old, is from Shenzhen, Guangdong. She complained of distending pain and intense pain after meal in upper abdomen in July 2015. As the symptoms were significant, she went to cancer hospitals in Beijng and Shenzhen for examinations. Findings of CT scan suggested a space-occupying lesion in the neck of pancreas, which is suspected to be pancreatic cancer. Doctors advised her to receive operation and chemotherapy. Considering her advanced age, Ms. Wang and her family member consulted with doctor on whether minimally invasive treatment is an alternative.

In July 2015, Ms. Wang had intensified abdominal pain. Her three children were so concerned about their mother that they searched for specialized cancer hospital across the country on the Internet. Fortunately, Ms. Wang and her family member watched the TV program on CCTV where Prof. Xu Kecheng, the Chief President of Fuda Cancer Hospital, shared his view on anti-cancer treatment. They went further to search more related reports Xu Kecheng and Fuda Cancer Hospital, all of which have all the more strengthened their determination to come to FUDA. Her daughter put down all her work and came to Fuda Cancer Hospital with her mother on July 27.

Fuda Cancer Hospital did not live up to Ms. Wang and her whole family’s trust. On the first day after admission, Prof. Xu Kecheng, the Chief President of FUDA and Dr. Niu Lizhi, Executive President of FUDA visited Ms. Wang. Considering her advanced age, Prof. Xu Kecheng and Dr. Niu Lizhi advised patient to receive NanoKnife therapy--a minimally invasive treatment. After learned that NanoKnife therapy can prolong pancreatic cancer patients’ lifespan and improve their quality of life, Ms. Wang and her family requested to receive NanoKnife therapy without hesitation.

The latest NanoKnife technology is expected to become an important breakthrough for pancreatic cancer treatment

In July 2015, the latest ablation technology--Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) also called NanoKnife therapy was approved by China for clinical application and FUDA became the first in Mainland of China to have introduced IRE. We have successfully treated over 20 cancer patients with IRE, which has delivered good curative effects, especially to pancreatic cancer patients. Clinical studies on NanoKnife therapy for pancreatic cancer demonstrated that NanoKnife therapy as a palliative treatment is suitable for pancreatic cancer patients that are not tolerant of operation, chemotherapy and standard treatment.

NanoKnife therapy (irreversible electroporation) is a novel and cutting-edge technology for tumor ablation. Ablation probes release microsecond high voltage pulses that form nanoscale irreversible electroporation, which will destroy intracellular balance and induce cell apoptosis quickly. NanoKnife therapy was approved by America FDA and EU for clinical application respectively in April 2012 and in December 2012.

The procedure went smoothly. Patient was discharged quickly.

In the morning of July 30, 2015, the NanoKnife therapy medical team led by Dr. NIu Lizhi performed puncture biopsy and NanoKnife therapy on pancreatic tumor for Ms. Wang. Dr. Niu Lizhi cut open the patient’s abdomen with great precision, separated stomach and intestine to expose pancreatic tumor. The 3.6x2.9 cm large pancreatic tumor was set as the target region. Dr. Niu Lizhi inserted the biopsy needle into pancreatic tumor and took out a strip-like tissue for pathological examination.

Then the procedure started. Under the guidance of ultrasound and CT scan, Dr. Niu inserted three electrodes to the bottom of pancreatic tumor for ablation. Eight groups of electric shock with 1500-2240 Voltage were done. During the procedure, Dr. Niu and other medical workers have been keeping an eye on the patient’s ECG and muscle contraction. The whole procedure witnessed the patient’s stable vital signs. The procedure went smoothly with little bleeding. Patient had a good postoperative procedure.

August 11 marks the 16th day of her hospitalization. She had a good recovery of spirit, sleep and appetite after treatment. After discussion, Kong Xiaofeng, the doctor in charge, Zhu Weibing, the director of 4th ward and Dr. Niu came to agreement that Ms. Wang can be discharged. She is expected to receive re-examination on September 10.

Ms. Wang and her daughter have been very satisfied with the treatment at FUDA. The cutting-edge medical technology at FUDA has rendered cancer patients the hope of life. What impressed them the most is that they keenly felt the humanitarian care delivered by the hospital and also the sincerity of each and every medical worker. Ms. Wang said, “NanoKnife therapy at Fuda Cancer Hospital has given me the hope of life”.
